A prime example of this is the Vailati technique, also known as the 3-step technique for oral rehabilitation or for treating patients with bruxism.
Oral rehabilitation for patients with bruxism
The Vailati technique is one of the newest approaches for full-mouth oral rehabilitation through the implementation of adhesive techniques on worn and eroded teeth. An introduction to this technique and its benefits is provided below.
It is a non-invasive alternative that utilizes adhesive dentistry to restore patients suffering from severe dental erosion—a problem that increasingly affects individuals of all ages.

The 3-Step Technique
This technique, also known as the ‘3-Step Technique’, was developed by Dr. Vailati at the University of Geneva. Among its key features is a structured protocol that allows for full-mouth oral rehabilitation in patients with extensive tooth wear, achieving this predictably and with minimal tooth preparation.
The Vailati technique provides an alternative to traditional treatments for managing bruxism or acid erosion cases. Until now, these scenarios were always treated using full-coverage crowns. While the traditional approach may still be the most indicated in certain situations, the adhesive-based Vailati technique should be the treatment of choice whenever a more conservative option for the teeth is possible.
Phases of the Vailati Technique
It is named the ‘3-Step Technique’ because it restores the lost structures of the teeth using composite resins and ceramics across three distinct phases.
The first phase consists of restoring the lost vertical dimension using composite inlays/onlays, or a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown if a tooth has undergone root canal treatment or is severely damaged. This rehabilitates the original height of the bite.
The second phase consists of restoring the bite guidance functions of the anterior teeth using palatal veneers, which are usually made of composite.
The final step is to restore the aesthetics of the smile using ceramic labial veneers on the anterior teeth that require them.
Following these 3 steps, the mouth regains all the aesthetic and functional characteristics of a youthful dentition through a minimally invasive treatment.
It is a complex treatment that requires chewing forces to be evenly balanced to prevent any issues from arising. For this reason, it is crucial that patients undergoing the Vailati technique properly maintain their treatment by wearing an occlusal splint and attending the necessary follow-up appointments for occlusal adjustments by the specialist.
In short, the Vailati technique represents excellent news for individuals suffering from extensive tooth wear due to bruxism, as the advantages it offers over conventional treatments make it a much more highly recommended, non-invasive alternative.
