What is guided implant surgery?

Computer-guided implant surgery is one of the major breakthroughs in the field of implantology. Thanks to this technique, measurements can be taken with astonishing accuracy, allowing implants to be placed virtually before the actual procedure in the patient’s mouth.

With guided implant surgery, we gain better insight into the patient’s condition and achieve greater precision throughout the process. Consequently, this leads to improved clinical outcomes and a significant reduction in risks and postoperative discomfort for the patient.

What are the advantages of guided dental implant surgery?

The main advantages of computer-guided implant surgery are as follows:

  1. Lower risks: First, by obtaining such a detailed map of the patient’s mouth, it is much less likely for complications to arise, such as touching a nerve or other sensitive areas. Since the location of delicate structures is known with exact precision, they can be avoided much more effectively than with older techniques.
  2. Less invasive surgery: Since all the necessary information is available and a surgical guide is used as a template, it is easier to perform the procedure with minimal incisions and perforations, making guided dental implant surgery much less invasive.
  3. Easier recovery: Naturally, as it is a less invasive procedure with fewer wounds, the recovery process is simpler and less painful for the patient. Furthermore, for this same reason, there are fewer risks during the healing process.
  4. Better results: By using such precise information even before starting the procedure, the outcomes are significantly improved, maximizing both functional and aesthetic results. This is why we highly recommend guided implant surgery.

Computer-guided implant surgery: Step by step

This type of guided implant technique begins with the overlaying of intraoral scanner images and computed tomography (3D X-ray) of the jaws. From these, a perfect three-dimensional model is created, containing detailed information about the patient’s teeth, gums, and bone structure.

With this 3D model, the patient’s mouth can be mapped with millimeter precision. The surgeon can then use specialized software to virtually simulate the operation and visualize the final placement of the dental pieces, aiming for the best possible functional and aesthetic result.

Once the planning is complete, a surgical guide is created to be used as a template during the procedure. This guide allows us to determine with maximum accuracy exactly where to drill, without having to open the gum more than necessary and at the precise depth required—neither more nor less. As a result, the intervention is significantly less invasive.

Following this, the procedure is carried out with much more precise information than was available with traditional methods.

In simple terms, this technique provides the surgeon with a much more accurate map to navigate and work comfortably.

As you have seen, computer-guided dental implant surgery is an innovative technique that has consistently shown excellent results since its introduction. We hope this has helped you better understand what it involves and why it is so important.
