What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery is one of the oldest specialties in dentistry.
It represents a significant portion of the core surgical knowledge and skills required to treat various oral conditions.
What does the surgery involve?
Oral surgery allows for the treatment and resolution of defects and pathologies located within the oral cavity, including lesions of the teeth, the maxilla, the mandible, and the surrounding soft tissues.
This range of surgical interventions can address common cases such as the extraction of impacted teeth, the removal of cysts and benign tumors from soft tissues and the jaws, and the reduction or elimination of overly strong frenulums that cause aesthetic or functional issues.
Oral surgery in Valencia also includes procedures such as gum surgery for smile aesthetics, dental implants, and regenerative or reconstructive bone surgery in cases of bone loss to allow for the subsequent placement of dental implants.
In most cases, these treatments are performed under local anesthesia, as surgical intervention would otherwise not be possible. More complex cases, or those where the patient requests it due to fear or anxiety, can be performed under intravenous conscious sedation.

When to undergo oral surgery?
Due to the wide range of conditions that can be resolved with oral surgery, many patients require it. The most common cases include tooth extractions for irreparable decay, teeth with periodontal disease, or those that are fractured, retained, or impacted, as well as extractions for orthodontic purposes, among others.
When teeth are missing, the indicated oral surgery is the placement of dental implants, which allow us to restore both the smile and chewing function.
Regenerative bone surgery and implantology are other types of oral surgery. These procedures are performed when a patient has bone atrophy or a lack of bone, to subsequently allow for the placement of dental implants.
Periapical surgery is also considered a form of oral surgery. This procedure is performed in cases where a root canal has failed. Before extracting an endodontically treated tooth that shows signs of reinfection, periapical surgery can often be performed to directly eliminate the infection, giving the tooth a new chance.
